Glaucoma cannot be cured. The better it is managed, the better the chance for saving sight.
A primary goal of Saving Kids' Sight is to help children at risk of losing their vision from uncontrolled, advanced glaucoma.
The Icare Lending Library was set up at Duke Eye Center to give families a sense of control over their child's glaucoma.
Families are trained in the use of the Icare tonometer and sent home with a loaned unit to monitor their child's eye pressure several times a day. The IOP numbers are reported back to their pediatric glaucoma specialist to enable timely adjustments to the child's medical care.
Over a hundred children have benefitted from the Icare Lending Library.
The Icare Lending Library project generates a lot of very useful data, enabling researchers to better understand childhood glaucoma and treatments and to share their findings through research papers and conferences.
The Icare Lending Library has has expanded our reach to children seen at Penn State in Hershey, PA and OHSU in Portland, OR, and we plan to expand to Bascom Palmer, FL
